Welcome to IFComp 2008, the competition for short text adventures.
7 May 2009: We are working on website stuff behind the scenes. Please bear with us; we'll have the 2009 website up in a couple of whiles.
16 November: The votes have been tabulated, and we have our winners! Congratulations to the top three games, Violet, Nightfall, and Everybody Dies, as well as to all authors for entering. And a big note of thanks to everyone who judged the games. The full results are available below.
23 October: A note on LAIR of the CyberCow. It should only be run under the ADRIFT 3.90 runner, as conversion to the 4.0 runner or running under non-Runner interpreters introduces bugs.
2 October: Due to an interpreter issue with Zoom under OS X, Escape from the Underworld cannot be finished using that interpreter. Please use Spatterlight or another z-code interpreter to play the game on the Mac.
2 October You can now download Comp08.z5, an optional z-code based interface that, like the voting page, will let you randomize the list of games and save your votes.
30 September (a little later): The games are now available for downloading, and the game information and voting page is open.
30 September: We're processing the games prior to releasing them.
1 September: Authors may no longer sign up for the competition.
19 April: The web site is open for business. Authors may sign up, while those who are interested can learn more about how to judge in the competition or can donate prizes.
The competition has ended, and the results are now available. The top three games are Violet, Nightfall, and Everybody Dies. The winners of the Miss Congeniality Contest, chosen by the authors themselves, are Violet, Everybody Dies, and Nightfall.
For the last fourteen years, the readers of the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.int-fiction have held a yearly interactive fiction competition. For fans of the old Infocom games as well as for newcomers to the genre, the competition is a chance to enjoy some of the best short adventure games available anywhere.
The organizer for the 2008 competition is Stephen Granade. Thanks go to all who have volunteered their time and energy to make this competition happen over the years. Special thanks go to Geof Morris, Mark Musante, Lucian Smith, Mike Snyder, Stefan Donati, and Misty Granade.
